Ted Mcgarth really is something!

I am not a graphic designer but I really do appreciate good illustrations and graphic design. I am no expert, but sometimes I think its almost easier not to be. You can just judge a picture or an illustration based on your immediate response and feelings. And my feeling for the work of Ted Mcgarth is just so good! Not only does he show us his amazing typographies and illustrations on his site, but he actually invites us to take a look at his sketchbook as well. It can’t get more personal than that… just take a look!

Flower series by Thora Breidfjord

It’s summer and time to invite friends over for gossip and a good cup of tee and maybe a piece of cake. And what better way to make a cute and fun table than to decorate it with the Flower series by Thora Breidfjord. Inspired from the dull old baking forms that you usually can find in your grandmothers kitchen drawer, she has transformed them into handmade porcelain dishes and bowls, each one bearing the name of the flower on which its shape is based!

Blown away with Hemann´s small storms

This is just amazing, and it couldn’t be a better time to say “I’m blown away”! Johannes Hemann has actually made a balance between casual shapes and controled design. He has created a series of products all made with the help of storms! Not natural storms, but small energy-generated storms, that blows materials together, so that it sticks and creates a shape. The results are some really beautiful products, which you can see here if you just press more…

Jewellery for your eyes!

Design have no limits, and I do believe the Dutch designer Erick Klarenbeek, can prove that for you. He has taken a whole new step when it comes to contact lenses and made them into jewellery. The eye jewellery project has a thin, thin copper wire attached to the lenses, hanging from you eye and down your check with pearls and diamonds on it.

Gina- the flexible car!

A lot of designers are really into cars. I am not one of them. But when our good friend Sigmund send us the link to Gina, even I hade to be fascinated. BMW ask the question “what do we need the skin of the car for? Does it have to be in metal?”, and their answer is a complete revulsion within car design; Flexibility! Instead of metal they have made a skin of a textile fabric that’s pulled taut around a frame of metal and carbon fiber wires.

Even the shape of the car can change with this new material, and it looks to me as the cars in Transformers are not just living on the screen anymore…

Gina looks a bit like an animal, opening its eyes in the morning, but instead it’s the front lights opening up. And they don’t even have to be open for that matter, the rear lights just shine through the skin:

What a really good idea from Yarisal & Kubllitz. I really do believe this should be placed in school building and offices, its just the perfect way to get out your anger!

Ps. To cheer up even more i strongly recomend a visit to Yarisal & Kubllitz, where you can press on the photos and see a lot of really fun and intrestng installations!

The coffee I hade was served in small traditional cups, but now the designer Esli Alovi from Isreal has made a new and modern version of the coffee set. Made in copper and ceramics it is modern, functional and decorative. Who wouldn’t have a drink of coffee from this?

When gadgets become fashion accessories..

I remember my first mobile phone, big as a rock and ugly as hell! But today the technology industry has understood that design is what makes it sell, and thank God for that! Gadgets are becoming fashion accessories and computers are as important as any relationship. The designer Kon Fanwen obviously has understood that portable computers are literally being transported everywhere, and he have therefore made No-Key, this beautifully and waterproof keyboard.

The keyboard is made if glass with the sign of the keys in the surface. The keyboard No-Key have a simple USB connection and a light that shines up every detail in the glass. Can it get any cooler? A mini- camera is what “reads” what key you are hitting!

Unfortunately this is not yet in production but I really do hope it will be soon! Looking good!

Lunuganga

The designers from the group WOKmedia, Julie Mathias and Wolfgang Kaeppner, are based in London with a production studio in Shanghai.
"Wokmedia’s work is primarily concerned with the emotional dimension, an archetypal memory or a physical sensation", they have described on their site, and I think a good example of this is these "Lunuganga" shelves, since they were inspired from a trip to Sri Lanka and a flooding and the cultural shock they experienced, when they made them. Check out more interesting projects and products by clicking more...

Lunuganga
"We wanted to take something of the feeling of the
flooded environment home, a seed of the jungle to plant in your house
which might invade it and take over. We took the image of partially submerged trees and translated it into shelves that have both the
qualities of the overgrown lake that surrounded us and the quietness of
European furniture."
_________________________________________________

Made in China
"The work, featuring traditional Chinese furniture embedded with hand-carved wooden toys and finished in white lacquer, is a result of our extended stay in China as part of a collaboration with Contrasts Gallery of Shanghai. Seemingly innocent children toys act as a kind of space invaders emerging from a world hidden inside our childhood memories. Specifically invading antique Chinese furniture, starting to threaten their traditional past."

_________________________________________________

New breed
"Shown at Design Miami last December. The work was commissioned by Contrasts Gallery and Pearl Lam and first launched at the Crossover Exhibition Shanghai beginning of September 2006. New Breed consisting of 69 partly broken upscale porcelain eggs. These are suspended from the ceiling and strewn on the ground. Inside each porcelain eggshells there are hand painted Chinese erotic drawings (traditionally produced by native craftsmen). It is as if each broken egg reveals some dark truth about its procreation; a reflection on notions of sexuality (and of their liberalization) in China. (Porcelain, inside painted through a small opening.
W 330-380 mm x diam. 270-300 mm)"

Between the lines
"During Design Miami in December 2007 we presented a new ‘bookcase’ called ‘Between Lines’. The work consists of seven mirror polished, stainless steel letter bands. The one-off edition piece marks the first set of a production line which will be launched in Milan 2008 and will be available in a rubber coated finish. Each of the 2.70 meter letter bands can be coiled up to a small roll, unfolded and reshaped to an infinite array of configurations. Without additional brackets the letter bands are simply screwed to the wall. The typical means of a book shelf which to often gets covered in layers of dust is thrown out of centre movement is favoured over stability. The shelf transforms into a sculpture and yet it reveals the beauty of the book covers and its content. When letters get mixed up, repeated, or when content gets confused and explanation fails an explosion of letters creates an unorganized support to hold our literature. Giving insight rather in closing its content which is to often covered with dust. Offering the possibilities to present them open rather having them closed and inviting to read ‘Between the Lines’."

Blow
"A ball shaped fan switched on and off using a baby fan mounted on its casing. You blow the little fan to turn on the main propeller, then stop it with your finger to switch it off. The fans spherical mesh body sits in a coil of cable like an egg in an egg cup so that it can be angled exactly as you need it. Your interaction with Blow is both playful and threatening, the tension around the normally forbidden action of putting your finger in a fan is set against the delightful discovery that your blow is answered in the same language. Design and concept in collaboration with Michael Cross."

Flood design museum tank
"A light that explores our nervousness around electricity, addressing it with a childish naivety using the archetype of a light bulb in water and apparently shoddy wiring to produce an icon of a ‘bad idea’ that works despite itself. Flood light is a serious proposition for a product, it is fascinating and beautiful and can be placed in the home. Only the idea is dangerous, not the product. Only the idea is dangerous, not the product."

Night watch

"Canary Wharf commissioned us to create a new large-scale light installation for the annual winter lighting exhibition in Jubilee Park, to enliven the dark winter months.
Night Watch employs the ancient Chinese art of inside painting where an image is reverse-painted through a small opening of a hollowed crystal ball. We have used the technique to paint a stunning variety of animal eyes into 200 crystal balls, which will be placed throughout the park, among the bushes and trees. In collaboration with lighting designer Admir Jukanovic/Mindseye the crystal balls are illuminated through automotive lights, resulting in a mesmerizing glow similar to animal eyes hit by a beam of light. When night falls a secret life unfolds that we tend to forget. The eyes tell the story of a creature’s life: its sources of food, its habits, its fears, and the history of its kind. Our vision was to create an installation that is looking at us as much as to be looked at. Being watched and observed has become an almost accepted part of our lives. The animal eyes act as metaphors: a questioning gaze towards our secured and controlled environments with little space left undeveloped."

Boca Do Lobo makes your plasma feel at home..

The other day I was discussing with a friend whether or not the new aria of flat-screen TV’s had transformed living rooms into something better or worse. The fact that it occupies less space, is off course a winning argument, but at the same time many of the plasmas have a heavy design, that you can’t avoid to see in a room. But then I stumbled upon this sideboard “Mondrian” from Boca Do Lobo and realised that when its out with the old TV, and in with the new flat-screen, than maybe its also time to redecorate to match it up?

A little touch of baroque style with Mondrian

Or what about spicing your living room up a little, with some colours and the Soho sideboard? The drawers gives you the feeling of boxes that will make your plasma look right at home!

Or maybe a some mirrors with Metropolitan that will reflect the rest of your beautiful living room, and maybe steel the attention from a otherwise shiny TV?

A drawer for every thought?

Hubero Kororo Design Group was founded by students of industrial design in Brno in spring 2005, and they had a lot of projects on their website, and they mainly have something to say with their work- it's not just pretty things to look at. "A product is not based only on a shape or a function. It has often ability to evolve users and tell something. Our focus is to realize our ideas in broader context. We are looking for a new relationships between the product and a user to move the board of design further from applied art to sociology and cultural context", they describe on their website.

Three wishes...

Its hot, and I am not sleeping well. Not having money for a proper bed I have placed mattresses on top mattresses, and I actually do feel like the princess on the pea, except that the prince still haven’t shown up. Maybe my bed isn’t the real deal? Maybe I need this new "Princess Bed" form Doshi Levien to get a Prince with it? And while I’m at it.. Can I get “my beautiful backside” coach too? And maybe even the "moroso charpoy" daybeds as well?

All work and no play, makes us some dull bloggers...

So PlayMeDeisgn has been a little more quiet than normal the last couple of weeks. Why? Well because we are all in our last year of different design degrees, and it’s in the middle of final exams and thesis. So in order to make it up to you that we are not as productive here on playmedesign right now, we thought we could show you what we are all working on.. So press more to take a look at what we do!

Kirsti is our fashion designer that for the last three years has been drawing and sewing her ass of at Istituto Marangoni in Milano. This dress is part of her thesis-collection called "Bloom" and Kirsti was inspired by the cold colors and the life under ocean in the Nordic parts of the world, where we are from. She have also made this drawing into an outfit, and if you are in Milan on the 2.july, you can see it on the big and fancy catwalk for the Marangoni fashion Show!

Camilla and Tine are our graphic designers! They are totally stressed out right now, but I managed to squeeze something out of them…

Camilla is working on a packaging project for a fish restaurant. The packaging is for take away for kids (picture coming soon). Other wise you can check out more of her nice works at www.camilla-rosenlund.com

Tine is right now working on her one webpage (www.tinemoe.com). Here is a sneak-peek on how it will look when it gets ready to se the light of day during this summer.

Me and Natalie are both graduating in Industrial design the 25 this month. So with not many days left until the thesis presentations we are both freaking out a little bit!

Natalie is currently working on a jewelry collection for here thesis, where you send vibrations to the other person instead of written messages. This way it becomes very personal and intimate between the two people, and perfect for sending a personal message exactly when you feel like it. (Without disturbing others). The project is inspired form here LoveWatch-project (the video over). You can take a closer look at this project on www.goodvibesjewelry.blogspot.com. Besides all of that she is also working on a project of learning Second Life in 20 days, and you can read more about that at www.secondlifein20days.blogspot.com.

I (Julia) am spending my days making a model of a ladder-chair called chair me up. My thesis revolves around the question "why don’t adults jump in puddles or climb in trees anymore?". After a long search for an answer to this question I ended up with the idée to make a product that would make it easier for adults to get up in a tree, to just sit there, relax and see things in a different view. To read more about this check out
www.off-ground.blogspot.com

That was It! Bare with us for a couple of weeks more, and we promise to come back stronger and better! Julia

Fresh Icelandic design on Birkiland!

Birkiland is a new design-website I just love! Their goal is to introduce, sell and support Icelandic design, and I have to say that they have some really good products. We have heard the labels “Scandinavian design” and “Made in Italy”(just to mention a few of the design labels), but how come Icelandic design doesn’t have a stronger name within Design? After all they have some pretty cool stuff to show of on Birkiland! The products are innovative, modern, fun and untraditional, and I will show you some of them here….

Soley's final project from the Icelandic Academy of Arts is all about finding new ways of using existing ways of manufacturing to create something new that is true to its origin but at the same time a brand new product.

Love Anna James

This is the work of the designer Anna James. She works from a studio in south east London, transforming twentieth century furniture into unique pieces of contemporary art. Each piece is fully restored by Anna before she creates her highly individual hand-painted designs. "Verona (the cabinet over) and Romeo and Juliet (under), have been inspired by Anna's visits to Juliet's house in Verona, Italy. She is totally captivated by the graffiti covering the walls at the archway entrance, all of it being declarations of love by visiting lovers, of all ages, from all over the world. The colours, and the messages create completely unique images", it is written on her website about these two pieces that I really love. Check out more from the collection by clicking more...
