Cross stitch it!

I can never forget how fun it was to make cross stitch embroidery when I was a kid- maybe it's time to reignite the passion for it. I absolutely want to when I see the new trend these days all over! Check out these different products; the redesigned Ikea-chair made more interesting by the designer Ragnheiður Ösp, the wooden table by Reddish or the bowl from Industreal (a cute thing that you buy as a kit, with different patterns to chose from and then you have to make it yourself). Enjoy!

Fleet Ilya

A new star is rising from London, Fleet Ilya, and this is hot stuff!
Bringing together the skill of classical training and the adrenalin of the london party scene, this accessories label is creating something that could be described as fetish fashion. Originaly from Israel, this designer is predicted to be the next big thing.
Big stars like Kylie Minouge, Sienna Miller and Jared Leto are already fans, and I dont think they will be the last ones...

The future of the kitchen geek!

In my case being a geek also means that I bring my computer with me everywhere! To the living room, my bedroom, the kitchen, and some rare times even to the bathroom (nothing’s like listening to the music or watching a movie while taking a bath). When it comes to bringing the computer into the kitchen it’s often to read the recipe online while baking or preparing dinner. This might result in a Mac with the smell of garlic or with a splash of chocolate… I am therefore so happy to see that the industries are now starting to produce screens and digital cookbooks, specifically adapted for the kitchen-geek!
Here you see the prototype ”kitchen sync” by Noah Balmer

True Italian romance...

As you all know; Italians love their Vespa! Mark Handforth understood this when he in 2001 had an exhibition in Turin. Knowing that a lot of the visitors would arrive to the museum on their scooter, he chose to do an installation using the Vespa as a sculpture, with candlelight’s burning on top of it. He transformed the bike, into a romantic object with a sociological content.
Check out more of his installations by pressing more…

Art-Warning!

There are very few English words on Kawanotakeshi page, but you don’t need to speak Japanese to understand the message in these sculptures. I love the mix of art and social comments, and these sculptures are definitely a reminder of how global warming will effect the animals as well as us humans.

Glowing trash art

I have always enjoyed the work of Dan Flavin neon tubes, and now I am happy that I have discovered David Batchelors work too, which is more or less in the same alley. He combines everyday items with a range of light-industrial materials: steel shelving, commercial light boxes, neon tubing, warehouse dollies, acrylics, and plastics. With a composition made of objects like soap dispensers and daily packaging, he transforms what we all consider waste and trash, into a sculpture that glows of colour and beauty.

A new way to sit on the floor!

Just when I thought that writing this blog was a little like talking to myself, I got a hot tip in my mailbox! Aswoon/Susan Woods Studio Ribbon Float has created the collection of lounge chairs, public seating, wooden couches and tables called “New Wave Line”. I’m not sure I love this shapes and designs, but I really got to give it to them for the untraditional use of plywood panels as material! I’ve always enjoyed sitting on the floor, so why not? (Thanks Kaja!)

Muji award 02.

This summer Muji had their second international competition, Muji award 02. The theme was RE, and I immediately thought that muji was on the environmental wave, with recycling, redesign and reuse. But obviously not! Don’t get me wrong, I really like the winning result “Towel with further options” and the other judges prize winners, and I can really see how it fits in perfectly at Muji. But I can not really see the link to RE, and therefore can´t help but to be a little disappointed. (I off course wish that my contribution, a chair called REplay had won…but oh well)

Jo CAN draw!

I’ve heard the expression "a picture says more than a thousands words", and maybe that’s why Jo Ratcliffe has absolutely no info or explanation of his work on his page jocandraw!? But as the page-address says; Jo CAN draw! His advertises, album covers, editorials and drawings are all stunning.

ATYPYK is addictive!

You thought you’ve seen it all, but no! ATYPYK takes it one step further and invites you into their “candy store”. It's unnecessary for me to say anything about these products, you have to discover, enjoy and love them all by your self! I strongly recommend you to go to their site, or to press more under this post, if you want to have a good laugh and be amazed by these creative minds!

Maarten Baas
Salone teaser:
Last year my feet were aching and I was dead-tired from walking around Zona Tortona. I remember thinking that the only thing I really wanted was a blister plaster and a shower, but then I stumbled over Maarten Baas showroom and suddenly it was all forgotten. For me good and innovative design can be like drugs… I spin around, all happy and estatic, and this year I really hope Maarten Baas will give me a new shot! He will be presented at two exhibitions during the Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2008. “Maarten Baas, April 2008” is a solo-exhibition, showing an overview of the works by Maarten Baas and Studio Baas & Den Herder from the past 5 years. And then also at “4.”, were we can see his new collection for Established & Sons.
Here are some teasers. On top of the page "Hay Chair"
"Fanchrome"
"Lawn Chair"
Can´t wait to see more!

Porcelain gets real with Industreal!
Salone teaser:
Porcelain can to some seem as a traditional and boring material but then they haven’t seen the work of Ionna Vautrin and Guillaume Delvigne at Industreal. Their work is innovative and modern and the organisation have had designers from all over the world to work for them, all with the same philosophy: Research is never an end in itself. All research is carried out with the view to creating something, an object, a collection. Industreal will present “Overtue” at Fabbrica del Vapore during Salone, showing you the poetry that these two designers have put into the material itself; porcelain.

Swarovski Crystal Palace

Salone teaser:
We like things that sparkles and shines and we are therefor really looking forward to see the Swarovski Crystal Palace during Salone del Mobile. This year they have invited the cream of the crop to work with Swarovski crystals, pushing the boundaries to create their own contemporary interpretations of furniture, lighting and design. The designers are Fredrikson Stallard, Tokujin Yoshioka, Zaha Hadid, Marcel Wanders, Arne Quinze, Piero Lissoni, Front Design, Paul Cocksedge, Marcus Tremonto and Studio Job. Can this get any better? The dramatic result will be shown as an exhibiton at Via Savona 56, in Zona Tortona, but until then we can enjoy this rendering of Zaha Hadid!

Hush!
HUSH is a Norwegian jazz group, which consists of 4 musicians that all met on Norges Musikkhøgskoles (Norwegian academy of music). One of these guys is Stian Larsen, who just happens to be one of my best friends! I made this poster for them, inspired by something dark, beautiful and floating. Their music is somewhat improvised, with inspiration from the history of both jazz and rock. Check them out!!

Playing pool on the dinner table....

I have earlier showed you a beautiful version of a ping-pong table and now its time for the pool table. I like playing pool even though I never win, but I would never place a pool table in my home, simply because I find it ugly. Fusion tables by Aramith have thought the same, and made a table that can be used as a dining table as well as a pool table. It’s not only a multi-purpose functional product, but also a design product. If I would have someone worse than me to play with (I off course want to win) then I might have bought this table!

GLOBAL EDITION
Salone teasers:
I have studied design in Denmark for a short while and one of the things I learned there was the rule of “less is more” and the importance of stripping down a product to the essential. Danish design clearly is minimalistic, simple and solid elegance, and so are the new collection from Bernhardt Design and Danerka, called Global Edition. Ten international designers were invited to create pieces that are timeless and simple while having a unique memorable quality. The collection will be presented at Salone del Mobile. (...)

Play with your food (part 2)

When we were kids, we were told not to play with our dinner. This man did obviously not listen to his mother...
Incredibly, everything you see in this images can be found in the fridge. The photographic artist Carl Warner, has captured all kinds of food in a series of still lifes. In this example, everything is made out of ham.. I say, go on.. Play with your food, as long as it turns out this amazing.

FURO – Japanese Authentic Bath Exhibition
Salone teasers:
Spring is coming closer but I still feel cold from a long winter up north, so I immediately wanted to take a hot bath when I saw these Japanese baths. They are designed by Ryu Kosaka, who wanted to express softness by creating something you just could not resist touching, and Yukio Hashimoto who made a bathtub that can be placed everywhere, giving us new ways to enjoy bathing. During Salone del Mobile they will be showed at the FURO – Japanese Authentic Bath Exhibition at Corso Como 9.

Curtains for geeks!

These curtains from Nienke Sybrandy, is another one of those 2 in 1 patterns- at first it looks like a beautiful tree-pattern, and when you go closer you see a complicated pattern from computer numbers (ASCII- American Standard Code for Informtaion Interchange). Perfect for us modern computer geeks!

Fair Trial My Arse!

I just love it when fashion takes a stand- like Joe Corre has done for Agent Provocateur with these protest panties. As the son of fashion-legend Vivienne Westwood, this man is no stranger to controversy. And when he heard that the U.K human rights charity Reprive had been accused of smuggeling undies to a prisoner at Guantánamo Bay (apparently a big no-no), he spoke out.
These panties in the Guantánamo-bright orange, makes a clear statment about what he thinks about the situation. Who said fashion and politics can´t mix?!

Fashion predictions for the year 2000... in 1936!
This video struck me as surprisingly acurate- I mean, for it being from 1936. Funny how they so presisly predict the shoe fashion, I just saw shoes like that the other day in one of the big fashion houses. Maybe we should listen more to our grandparents about fashion advice?

Pouvlov the Pouf!
When a good project just happens to show up in our inbox we are more than happy to post it! This pouf is one that deserves some attention. It’s called the Pouvlov and was designed by a small company of designers called Innvire, that wanted to be able to be more flexible during meetings, in offices and homes. They’ve worked with the famous Dutch designer Tord Boontje on one of the fabrics, and the resolute looks both really cool and comfortable.

respect!

I saw this campaign for the first time today, but I realized its from 2006. Just wanted to post these cool pictures made by the New York-photographer Warwick Saint. He has been photographing personalities like Cate Blanchett, Alel Wek, Nelly Furtado and Hilary Swank just to mention some. Lets say he got my respect..

Compact living!

What a great and logic solution to all those small spaces out there! It only builds 31 cm, so you'll get the bed out of the way, or have an extra bed for guest in a second! The name is Lollipop, and it is made by the company BonBon trading.

Clamp it!

Jorre van Ast is a London-based product designer, and he made this series called "clampology". I love the fact that you can "clamp" it on wherever you like, it makes it multifunctional and interactive. The collection of these utensils includes a book stop accompanied by a book finger, a book display, a hook and a rail that clamp onto the side of horizontal surfaces, a hook to clamp on to electrical pipes, a candle holder, and a cable manager that can be clamped onto a table leg.
